The Lady Scots traveled to Floresville last Wednesday to compete in the 46th annual Barbara Harvey Basketball Tournament. Floresville, in case you are wondering, is south of San Antonio and is the Peanut Capitol of Texas (thank you Siri). Twenty-four teams competed in the tournament which included 4A high schools to 6A high schools from all over the state of Texas. Your Lady Scots took down Harlingen and Somerset on day one of pool play, placing themselves in the gold bracket for the remainder of the tournament. The Lady Scots faced a scrappy and solid three-point shooting team in Stevens in the first round of bracket play but handled business by holding the opponent to only 35 points while scoring 77 of their own, connecting on 51% of their shots overall. The Lady Scots combined for 58 rebounds and 30 assists in the victory. The semi-final round ended with a win for the opposing team and eventual tournament champions, Harlan High School. The Lady Hawks of Harlan came into the tournament with only one loss on the season. Statistically, the Lady Scots played closer than the 59-45 score tells with the most glaring difference being free throw attempts; Harlan shot twenty and connected on thirteen while Highland Park shot two, making both. Despite the tough loss, the Lady Scots bounced back on Saturday with an overtime victory against Samuel Clemens High School, defending tournament champions, solidifying a third place finish in the tournament. Overall, the Lady Scots averaged an impressive 39 rebounds and 20 assists on the weekend and shot 49.1%. Senior captain, Paris Lauro, was named to the all-tournament team. Lauro averaged 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists in the five games. Congratulations Lady Scots!
