Highland Park WR Finn Corwin has career night, 4-touchdown game in 35-18 win over Mesquite Horn

UNIVERSITY PARK - Finn Corwin will be forever grateful that one more lightning delay never came. The 5-10, 170-pound Highland Park senior had a career night, with nine catches for 205 yards and four touchdowns, playing a big role in his team's 35-18 weather-delayed victory over Mesquite Horn at Highlander Stadium. One more stoppage for lightning and all likelihood the game would not have been played. As it was, the game did not end until 12:44 a.m. "I haven't scored four touchdowns in a game since YMCA ball,'' said Corwin. "It was all due to our schemes and having unselfish teammates.'' Corwin praised the work of junior quarterback Chandler Morris, who threw for 312 yards, rushed for 32 and had a hand in five touchdowns. "He does whatever it takes,'' said Corwin. Some of the receiver's contributions came after losing a fingernail. Randy Allen, the Highland Park coach, said Corwin has a knack for getting open: "Our players call him 'Gamer.'' Highland Park (2-0), the top-ranked Class 5A team in both SportsDay's area ranking and The Associated Press' state poll coming off back-to-back Class 5A-Division I state championships, stretched its consecutive-game winning streak to 17. For Mesquite Horn (0-2), No. 14 in the area 6A ranking, the schedule has to get easier from here. Last week Horn was beaten 40-0 by the state's No. 1 ranked Class 6A team, Allen. Morris, the son of Arkansas Razorbacks coach Chad Morris, ran for one touchdown and connected with Corwin for scoring passes of 63 and 9 yards to help the Scots to a 19-9 halftime lead. Horn rallied with a 36-yard touchdown run by Ben Wyatt and a 42-yard field goal by Richard Garcia just before the break to close within 10. Corwin showed some open-field moves on a 42-yard touchdown catch and run on Highland Park's first possession of the second half for a 26-9 lead. Horn answered when N'Kowsi Emory showed some nice broken field moves of his own on a 60-yard punt return to close within 10, 26-16. Highland Park's strong pass rush paid dividends late in the third period when Prince Dorbah end-zone sack produced two points for a 28-16 lead. On the second play of the fourth quarter, the Scots went back to a play that had gotten Corwin open and it worked again, this time for 43 yards and a 35-16 lead.Defensively, Rhodes Baker and Andrew Bonnet had first-half interceptions. Horn quarterback Jermaine Givens, facing a hard-charging Scots defense, rushed for 62 yards and threw for 45.
